Evolutionary Dwellings, Institute for the Studies of Arts
Professor Terry Surjan
Project Website Integrating digital technology into College of Architecture curricula has been an important focal point. Our project, Evolutionary Dwellings, highlights the use of computers to expand and redefine the process of archite ctural design. An adaptable and transformable design process has been explored, including the use of websites, video, 3-D animation, Qucktime Virtual Reality, traditional drawing and physical models. Our investigation of aspects of this design process using the specialized 3-D software, Alias, began in the Spring '97 semester under the supervision of Guy Mullins, at the Instruction Support Group's media facilities. Development of advanced animation t echniques continues on Silicon Graphics workstations accessible through I.S.A and the I.T. Visualization Lab. "Evolutionary Dwellings" is sponsored by a grant from Institute for Studies in the Arts, College of Fine Arts. I.S.A. conducts and supports creative activity that extends traditional frameworks of knowledge and experience in the arts. A theme central to our project is the potential effect of inhabitation on the exterior condition of everyday dwellings. As architects, communication of the creative vision of our work is also a measure of the project's success. |
