Belinda Stillwell, Researcher

Ms. Stillwell is researching the feedback that coaches give athletes. The intent of this research is to analyze the coaching behaviors, the effects on the athletes, and then provide follow-up instruction to the coaches t o improve their coaching techniques.

The practices and games of seventh and eighth grade girls volleyball and boys wrestling will be videotaped for five weeks starting in March 1997. When viewing the tapes, Ms. Stillwell will use an interval recording method to categorize the coaching behavi ors as:

  • specific feedback
  • positive feedback
  • corrective feedback
  • general feedback

The ASU Observation Instrument will be used in this categorization process.

The coaches will fill out a questionnaire after each practice and game recording their perceptions of their behavior. The data collected will be compared and examined for:

  • perceived vs. actual coaching behaviors
  • game vs. practice coaching behaviors
  • inexperienced coaches vs. experienced coaches coaching behaviors
